The Gospel According to James Baldwin
by Jill O’Brien

This year marks the 100th anniversary of James Baldwin’s birth, and a provocative book, The Gospel According to James Baldwin by Greg Garrett, was chosen as one of the church book discussions for summer 2024. A diverse group crowded the church library and examined Baldwin’s background, unique challenges, and consistent philosophy. The particular charm of this discussion group was that everyone had a story about her or his sense of being the “other,” as well as central themes of race, gender, sexuality, religious upbringing, and politics that distinguished Baldwin in his writing and public appearances. His interview on the Dick Cavett show, and his debate in England with William F. Buckley were also discussed along with several programs aired this summer on various networks. His strong views on the delusions of racial divide, patriotism despite government-sponsored discrimination, family strife, and the dangers of extreme prejudice were the springboard for individual stories shared by members of the group.
The recounting of each personal history and listening to each other’s story went far beyond a book discussion.
