When asked to provide a short summary of facts associated with our July 2023 flood, Josh Karp, Greensboro Selectboard Member offered the following points, and a few pictures. Lest we forget!

  • Approx. 60% of roads in town (37) sustained damage ranging from minor to catastrophic.
  • Roads with moderate to severe damage included Craftsbury Rd, Baker Hill, Barr Hill, Bend Rd., Bayley Hazen, Edsall Hill, Gebbie, Gonyaw, Harrington Hill, North Shore, Old Schoolhouse, Overlook, Sparhawk, Shadow Lake, and Young.
  • It is expected that FEMA and the State of VT will cover 97% of eligible repair costs. The initial estimate to fix all damaged roads and upgrade ditching and culverts to state standards is $2,775,000 which includes a bridge replacement on Shadow Lake Rd. that may cost $400k. So, while the town’s share of costs could be as high as $80k, we’re hoping our estimate was high and the actual cost will be lower.
  • A wrinkle is that while the town has confidence that the larger projects will be paid for, FEMA may not cover some of the smaller projects for a variety of reasons. However, the amount that FEMA will be sending the town for our gravel, road crew labor, equipment use, and administrative time should more than offset the cost of these few projects plus the considerable interest the town is paying on its $1 million line of credit.
  • An interesting fact: the value of the gravel we took out of the town’s Glover pit to repair the roads totals about $290,000 – which happens to be the purchase price of the gravel pit in 1993! (unadjusted for inflation)

As you drive these and other roads this summer, give thanks that our roads are now sturdy and safe.
